Emergency Preparedness NZ — Be Ready for Earthquakes, Floods & Storms (2026)
Emergency Preparedness NZ — Be Ready for Earthquakes, Floods & Storms (2026)
New Zealand sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire and gets hit by cyclones, floods, and storms every year. Emergency preparedness isn't paranoia — it's common sense.
What Civil Defence Recommends
The NZ government recommends every household be self-sufficient for at least 3 days (72 hours) — ideally 7 days.
Essential Supplies
- Water: 3 litres per person per day (9L minimum per person for 3 days)
- Food: Non-perishable, easy to prepare without power
- Torch: LED with spare batteries — not candles (fire risk after earthquakes)
- Radio: Battery or hand-crank for emergency broadcasts
- First aid kit: Plus any prescription medications
- Warm clothing & blankets: Power = no heating
- Cash: EFTPOS won't work without power
For Families with Children
- Nappies, formula, baby food
- Comfort items — a favourite toy or book
- Games/activities — kids need distraction
- Extra water and snacks
For Pet Owners
- Pet food and water (3+ days)
- Lead, collar, carrier
- Medications
- Comfort items
NZ's Biggest Natural Hazards
Earthquakes
- NZ gets 15,000+ earthquakes per year (most too small to feel)
- Secure heavy furniture, hot water cylinders, and TVs
- Know your tsunami evacuation zone if coastal
- After a quake: check for gas leaks, don't use lifts, expect aftershocks
Flooding & Storms
- NZ's most frequent natural disaster
- Know your flood risk (check your council's hazard maps)
- Never drive through floodwater
- Move valuables and important documents upstairs
Volcanic Activity
- Auckland sits on a volcanic field — next eruption is "when" not "if"
- Ash fall: N95 masks, goggles, stay indoors
- Central Plateau: Ruapehu, Tongariro, Ngauruhoe — all active
