Fishing Tackle Best Sellers: The Game Rods, Hooks, Swivels and Fish Tools Kiwis Are Buying Now

Spring's here, the water's warming up and the order book in our Fishing Tackle range is showing it. We've gone back through our real orders from the last 90 days to see what Kiwi anglers are actually buying, and this time we've pulled out five sellers we haven't covered in recent tackle round-ups — from a proper stand-up game rod right down to the humble swivel.

These are genuine best sellers at real prices. No hype, just what's been leaving the shelves.

1. Tica Kazumi 24-37kg Stand Up Game Rod 5'6" — $199.99

Tica Kazumi 24-37kg stand up game rod 5 foot 6

Our headline pick. Four of these have gone out in the last 90 days, which is a good sign that people are getting set for the bigger stuff this season. The Kazumi is built for New Zealand conditions from durable E-glass infused with graphite, and it comes with a wind-on roller tip, a removable alloy butt and an EVA grip. At 5'6" overall and rated 24-37kg, it's a stand-up rod for anglers who want to put real pressure on a fish without spending a fortune.

2. Mustad 18R Tainawa Snapper Hooks (box of 100) — $41.06

Six boxes sold. The Tainawa is a snapper hook, and buying the box of 100 is the way to go if you tie your own rigs, run a longline or just hate running out halfway through a good bite. It's the kind of thing regulars buy once and then keep coming back for.

3. Brass Barrel Swivels, Bulk 100 Packs — from $6.50

Brass barrel fishing swivels in a range of sizes

Eight bulk bags sold. These are a good general-purpose inshore swivel, made in Korea and sold in bags of 100. Sizes run from tiny #8 right up to 5/0, so there's one for light soft-bait traces and one for heavier ledger rigs. Prices go from $6.50 up to $47.00 depending on size — and when you work it out per swivel, it's hard to beat for anyone building rigs at home.

4. Flounder Spear Head, Single Prong — $9.99

Single prong flounder spear head

Seven sold. Floundering on the flats on a calm night is a classic Kiwi pastime, and this is the simple way into it: a durable single-prong spear head that fits over a wooden handle. Fit your own handle and you're ready to go gigging. At under ten bucks it's also a cheap spare to keep in the shed.

5. Kilwell Iki Spike — $9.99

Kilwell iki spike with offset T handle

Five sold. More and more anglers are looking after their catch properly, and the iki spike is the tool for it. Ikijime was developed in Japan for sashimi-grade fish, and pushing the spike straight into the brain is the most humane way to kill a fish. Kilwell's version has an ergonomic offset T handle and a rust-resistant stainless steel spike, and it comes with Kilwell's lifetime warranty.

A few more that kept turning up in orders: the Sea Harvester stainless steel filleting glove ($10.00, sizes M to XXL) for safer filleting, the fish measure for crayfish, scallops and fish ($10.00) that covers snapper at 27cm and 30cm, and 4oz breakaway sinkers ($5.50) for the surfcasters — see Breakaway Sinkers.

What the order book tells us

This spring, Kiwi anglers are gearing up for a bit of everything: game fishing, snapper on the hook, flounder on the flats, and taking better care of what they land. Pacific Island anglers shop with us too, so if you're fishing from the Islands and after something specific, get in touch.
