Fishing Tackle Best Sellers: The Reels, Kingfish Lures, Rigs and Sinkers Kiwis Are Buying Now

Labour Day has been and gone, the evenings are stretching out and summer fishing is just around the corner. So we've gone back through our real orders from the last 90 days in the Fishing Tackle range to see what Kiwi anglers are buying to get ready — and this time we've picked five sellers we haven't featured in our recent tackle round-ups.

Everything here is a genuine recent best seller at its real price. There's a reel for the budget-minded, a kingfish lure for the offshore crew, and the bits and pieces that keep beach and boat rigs ticking over.

1. Tica Ezi-Cast EC4000 Spin Reel — $36.80

Tica Ezi-Cast EC4000 spin fishing reel

Our headline pick. Four of these have gone out in the last 90 days, and it's easy to see why: it's a proper spin reel at a price that won't scare anyone off. The EC4000 has a forged aluminium spool, a computer-balanced rotor, an anti-twist line roller and a thick aluminium bail wire, with shielded bearings to help keep water, sand and dust out. It weighs 199g, has a 5.2:1 gear ratio, up to 5kg of drag and holds 215yds of 12lb mono or 300m of PE#1.5. The handle swaps left or right, and Tica backs its reels with a 10 year warranty. A great first reel for the kids, or a spare for the bach.

2. Catch Long John Slide Kingfish Lure — from $11.25

Catch Long John Slide kingfish lure

Four sold, and with kingfish season coming up that number tends to climb. The Long John Slide is a slider-style jig whose low-profile fins give it a long sideways darting action on both the drop and the retrieve, finished in a bright holographic coat. It comes rigged with a 450lb Kevlar assist cord, stainless 9/0 or 11/0 hooks and a 300lb solid ring. You can pick your weight and colour — Ballistic Blue, Orange Assassin, Shady Lady, White Warrior and more — with prices running from $11.25 up to $29.88 depending on the option.

3. Sea Harvester Snapper Recurve Rig 6/0 Chartreuse — $5.00

Sea Harvester snapper recurve flasher rig 6/0 chartreuse

Ten sold — the busiest single rig in this round-up. It's a pre-tied Sea Harvester snapper flasher rig with 6/0 recurve hooks in a chartreuse finish. At five bucks a rig, most people grab a handful so they're not re-tying on the water when the snapper come on the bite. The 4/0 and 8/0 versions sold well too, if you want to size up or down.

4. Breakaway Sinker 3oz — $5.50

3oz breakaway surfcasting sinker

Eight sold. Surfcasting off the beach is about as Kiwi as it gets over summer, and breakaway sinkers are a staple in plenty of surfcasters' tackle boxes. The 3oz is the most popular size we sell, and they're sold singly so you can stock up on exactly as many as you lose. Heavier 4oz, 5oz and 6oz sizes are in the range too.

5. Leader Trace 100m x 100lb Spool — $15.00

100m spool of 100lb clear leader trace

Seven spools sold. A length of heavy leader gives you extra protection against teeth, rock, reef and shell-covered pylons, and because it's clear it's harder for fish to spot the line tied to your bait or lure. With 100m of 100lb on the spool for $15, it'll make a lot of traces — handy for heavier snapper rigs, kingfish jigs or longline droppers.

Also popular

A few more that kept turning up in orders: Coastlock ball bearing swivels in 180lb ($10.99 for two) from the Coastlock Swivels range, the Bite Groper FlashRig 2-hook 13/0 in pink ($15.99) for deep-water groper from Hapuka Hooks & Rigs, and 13/0 kirbed circle hooks by the hundred ($38.00) in Circle Hooks.
