How to Choose the Right Yacht Braid — Rope Size Guide for NZ Sailors

Buying the wrong size yacht rope is one of the most common mistakes NZ sailors make. Too thin and you risk chafe, discomfort, and potential failure. Too thick and you're paying extra for weight and windage you don't need. Here's how to get it right.

The Golden Rule: Match the Rope to the Job

Different lines on your boat do different jobs, and each job needs a different rope characteristic:

  • Sheets — need to be comfortable in your hand and run freely through blocks
  • Halyards — need minimum stretch to hold sail shape
  • Control lines — need to be thin, light, and easy to cleat
  • Docklines — need stretch to absorb shock loads from waves and wind

Recommended Sizes by Boat Length

Dinghies & Small Boats (under 20ft)

Application Recommended Size Best Rope
Main sheet 6-8mm Fineline Classic
Jib sheets 6mm Classic or Control Line
Halyards 4-6mm Fineline Advantage
Control lines 3-4mm Advantage

Keelboats & Cruisers (25-35ft)

Application Recommended Size Best Rope
Main/genoa sheets 10-12mm Classic or Advantage
Halyards 8-10mm Advantage (low stretch)
Spinnaker sheets 8-10mm Classic
Control lines 6-8mm Classic
Docklines 10-12mm Nylon dockline

Offshore & Racing Yachts (35-50ft)

Application Recommended Size Best Rope
Main/genoa sheets 12-16mm Advantage for racing, Classic for cruising
Halyards 10-12mm Advantage
Runners 8-10mm Advantage
Reefing lines 8-10mm Classic
Docklines 14-16mm Nylon dockline

Which Fineline Braid for Which Job?

  • Halyards: Use Advantage Dyneema — low stretch keeps sail shape locked in
  • Sheets: Classic polyester for cruising (softer hand feel) or Advantage for racing
  • Control lines: Advantage in small diameters gives the most precise control
  • Spinnaker guys: Classic — you want some give when the kite fills
  • Docklines: Fineline nylon docklines — stretch absorbs shock loads

Pro Tips from NZ Sailors

  1. Buy by the metre if you need exact lengths — saves money vs buying a 100m reel when you only need 30m
  2. Buy 100m reels if you're fitting out a whole boat — better value per metre
  3. Colour-code your lines — use Fineline Classic's colour options or Traditional's flecked patterns to identify lines at a glance. Critical for racing crews
  4. Upgrade halyards first — switching from polyester to Dyneema halyards makes the single biggest difference to sail performance
  5. Don't forget UV — NZ sun is brutal. Fineline ropes are designed for NZ UV, unlike cheap imports
