RV Windows & Roof Vents NZ — The Complete Guide to Cleer Vision, MPK & Plastoform

RV Windows & Roof Vents in NZ — How to Choose, Measure & Fit

Whether you're replacing a worn-out motorhome window, adding ventilation to your campervan, or upgrading a caravan bathroom window — choosing the right product starts with understanding your options. This guide covers every RV window and roof vent we stock at Action Outdoors, with fitting measurements, installation tips, and a brand-by-brand breakdown.

⚠️ Disclaimer: All product specifications, dimensions, cutout sizes, and fitting details in this guide are sourced from manufacturer data. Always verify measurements for your specific vehicle before cutting or ordering. Vehicle walls and roofs vary — what fits one motorhome may not fit another. If in doubt, contact us before ordering.

Step 1: Windows or Vents?

First, identify what you need:

Type Purpose Mounts To Brands We Stock
Sliding windows Light + ventilation through side walls Wall (vertical) Cleer Vision, Plastoform
Roof vents Overhead ventilation + natural light Roof (horizontal) MPK Vision Star

Cleer Vision Aluminium Sliding Windows

Cleer Vision is a US manufacturer of premium aluminium sliding windows designed specifically for recreational vehicles, trailers, vans, and boats. Every window features:

  • Flush-mounted design — sits smooth against the exterior for an aerodynamic, clean look
  • Black powder-coat finish — durable, weather-resistant, UV-stable
  • Radius corners — no sharp edges, reduces stress cracking
  • Secure locking — integrated latch system for security
  • 50 mm wall thickness — designed for standard RV wall construction

Size Guide & Cutout Dimensions

The overall size is the outer frame dimension. The cutout size is the hole you need to cut in your wall. The window flange overlaps the cutout to create a weather seal.

Model Overall Size (W×H mm) Cutout Size (W×H mm) Best For Price
595 × 340mm 595 × 340 555 × 300 Smaller openings — vans, boats, bathrooms $365
545 × 645mm 545 × 645 ~505 × 605* Portrait/tall openings — caravans, motorhomes $412
515 × 515mm 515 × 515 ~475 × 475* Square openings — balanced proportions $465
1250 × 595mm 1250 × 595 ~1210 × 555* Large panoramic — motorhome living areas $630
1300 × 670mm 1300 × 670 1270 × 635 Extra-large panoramic — main living area $666

* Approximate cutout based on typical Cleer Vision flange overlap (~20 mm per side). Always confirm with manufacturer data or contact us for the exact cutout for your model.

How to Measure for a Replacement Cleer Vision Window

  1. Measure the wall opening (the hole in your wall), NOT the old glass or frame. Measure width and height at multiple points — openings can be slightly irregular.
  2. Check wall thickness — Cleer Vision windows are designed for 50 mm walls. Measure from inner to outer wall surface at the window opening.
  3. Verify window style — sliding, fixed, horizontal or vertical opening. All our Cleer Vision windows are horizontal sliding.
  4. Order the closest size up — the window's overall dimension must be larger than your cutout. The flange overlaps the hole to create the seal.

Installation Basics (Cleer Vision)

  1. Remove the old window — undo all perimeter screws from inside, push window out, clean old sealant off with a putty knife
  2. Test-fit the new window in the opening — ensure the flange overlaps at least 10 mm on all sides
  3. Apply butyl seal tape around the window flange (start at bottom centre, work around)
  4. Press window into the opening from outside and secure with screws from inside
  5. Fit the interior trim ring and check for any gaps
  6. Check for leaks with a gentle hose test

How to Measure for a Roof Vent

  1. Measure your roof thickness — from inner ceiling panel to outer roof surface. Must be between 25–60mm for MPK vents.
  2. Check for obstructions — ensure the cutout area is clear of wiring, structural supports, and ducting. Mark the area from below using a torch to check for shadows.
  3. Ensure the roof is flat — the vent must sit on a flat surface both inside and out. Do not fit to curved or domed roof sections.
  4. Mark the cutout — 400 × 400mm or 700 × 500mm depending on model. Use a straight edge and spirit level.

Installation Basics (MPK Roof Vents)

  1. Cut the roof opening to the exact cutout size (400×400 or 700×500mm). Clean all edges.
  2. Separate inner and outer frames — the vent comes in two parts.
  3. Apply flexible sealant (external-grade, not supplied) around the cutout edge.
  4. Position outer frame on the roof — handles must face front and rear of vehicle, NOT sideways.
  5. Secure with 8 fixing brackets — four in corners, four in centres. Use pan-head screws (3.5mm, entering frame ~10mm). Max torque 0.5 Nm.
  6. Fit inner frame from inside — gently pull out cover profiles to reveal fixing points. Secure with screws or large plastic screws (supplied) depending on whether you have a timber support frame.
  7. Test the blind and flyscreen — ensure smooth operation before finishing.

⚠️ Important: Do NOT use countersunk screws — they damage the frame. Do NOT over-tighten. Stop as soon as brackets start to distort.

General Fitting Advice for All RV Windows & Vents

Before You Order

  1. Measure the opening — not the old window. The wall or roof opening (hole size) is what determines which product you need. Measure width and height at multiple points.
  2. Measure wall/roof thickness. This determines which products are compatible with your vehicle.
  3. Check the mounting surface. Must be flat, clean, and structurally sound. Repair any rot, delamination, or damage before fitting a new window.
  4. Photograph the existing fitment from inside and outside — helpful if you need advice.

Tools You'll Need

  • Tape measure + spirit level
  • Drill + appropriate drill bits
  • Jigsaw (for new cutouts) or putty knife (for replacements)
  • Flexible external-grade sealant (butyl or polyurethane)
  • Screwdriver / drill driver (low torque setting)
  • Masking tape for marking clean cut lines

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Measuring the glass instead of the opening — always measure the wall/roof hole
  • Over-tightening screws — especially on MPK vents (max 0.5 Nm). Stop when brackets just start to grip
  • Using silicone sealant — use butyl or polyurethane instead. Silicone doesn't adhere well to aluminium and acrylic long-term
  • Fitting roof vents with handles sideways — handles MUST face front and rear of the vehicle
  • Skipping the test fit — always dry-fit before applying sealant
