Sinker Moulds NZ — How to Cast Your Own Fishing Sinkers at Home

Sinker Moulds NZ — Cast Your Own Fishing Sinkers at Home

Tired of paying $5–$10 for sinkers every fishing trip? Sinker moulds let you cast your own at home for a fraction of the cost. In NZ, "sinker moulds nz" gets over 160 searches per month on Google — and for good reason.

Why Cast Your Own Sinkers?

  • Save money — A mould pays for itself in 2–3 sessions. Lead is cheap (or free from scrap).
  • Custom weights — Make exactly the size you need for your spot.
  • Never run out — Cast a bucket-load before the season.
  • Satisfying hobby — Genuinely fun, especially with kids (safely!).

Types of Sinker Moulds

Ball Sinker Moulds

The most popular style in NZ. Ball sinkers are used for running rigs and strayline fishing — the bread and butter of Kiwi snapper fishing. Moulds come in sizes from 1/4oz to 6oz.

Reef/Bomb Sinker Moulds

Elongated shape for surfcasting and bottom fishing. Less likely to snag in rocks than ball sinkers. Heavy options (16oz–30oz) for deep water and strong currents.

Combo Moulds

Multiple cavity sizes in one mould — cast several sizes at once. Best value if you fish different spots.

What You Need

  1. Sinker mould — Aluminium moulds are the standard. Pro Hunter and Star moulds are popular in NZ.
  2. Lead — Scrap lead, wheel weights, or pure lead from a metal supplier.
  3. Melting pot — A cast iron or steel pot. Purpose-built lead pots are best (thermostat control).
  4. Heat source — Gas burner or electric hotplate.
  5. Safety gear — Gloves, eye protection, well-ventilated area. Lead fumes are toxic — always cast outdoors.
  6. Swivels or wire loops — For the sinker eyes (some moulds have built-in eye pins).

Safety Warning

Molten lead is extremely dangerous. Always:

  • Work outdoors or in very well-ventilated areas
  • Wear heat-resistant gloves and eye protection
  • Keep water away from molten lead (steam explosion risk)
  • Never let children handle molten lead
  • Wash hands thoroughly after handling lead
