🎣 "Feed the Family" — that's what mullet netting is all about. Whether you're stocking the smoker or filling the freezer, this guide covers everything you need to know before buying your first (or next) mullet net.

What Type of Mullet Net Do You Need?

There are two main types of mullet net used in New Zealand:

1. Mullet Set Nets (Most Popular)

Set nets are anchored in position and left to fish passively. The net hangs like a curtain in the water — mullet swim into it and get tangled by the gills. This is the most common method for recreational fishers.

  • Best for: Harbours, estuaries, river mouths, channels
  • How it works: Set and leave for a few hours (check every 12 hours minimum per MPI rules)
  • Mesh size: 90mm or 100mm (both legal nationwide)
  • Lengths available: 20m, 30m, 40m, 60m, 100m

2. Mullet Drag Nets

Drag nets (also called beach seine nets) are actively pulled through the water by two people. Great for shallow beaches, sandbars, and river flats.

  • Best for: Sandy beaches, shallow estuaries, river flats
  • How it works: Two people drag the net through shallow water
  • Mesh size: 85mm, 90mm, or 100mm
  • Lengths available: 20m, 30m, 40m

Mullet Net Sizing Guide — Which Length Do You Need?

Net Length Best For Price From
20m Small estuaries, tight spots, beginners $115
30m Most popular — covers good ground, easy to manage solo $133
40m Bigger harbours, river mouths $160
60m Serious fishing — harbours, channels, commercial-grade $230
100m Maximum coverage — experienced fishers, big areas $420

Our recommendation: Start with a 30m net. It's the most popular length — long enough to cover good ground, but still easy to set and pick up on your own.

Mono vs Multi-Mono Mesh — What's the Difference?

Mono Mesh (Single Strand)

  • Thinner, more invisible in water
  • Good catch rate in clear water
  • More affordable
  • Slightly less durable

Mullet Nets Mono 20m–100m from $133

Multi-Mono Mesh (Twisted Multi-Strand)

  • Stronger, more durable — lasts longer
  • Better at holding larger fish
  • Slightly higher catch rate in dirty water
  • Preferred by experienced fishers

Mullet & Snapper Multi-Mono from $126

Floating Mullet Nets

Floating nets sit at the surface — ideal for targeting mullet schooling near the top of the water in harbours and estuaries.

NZ Made Floating Mono Mullet from $230

60m Floating Multi-Mono Mullet $475

MPI Rules for Mullet Nets (2026)

Before you buy, make sure you know the rules:

  • Minimum mesh size: 100mm (set nets in most areas). Some areas allow 90mm for drag nets only.
  • Maximum net length: 60m per person (recreational). Two people = 120m combined.
  • Must check every 12 hours (dawn and dusk recommended).
  • Must be marked with your name and contact details at each end.
  • Set net bans: Check your local area — some harbours have seasonal or permanent set net bans (e.g., parts of Hauraki Gulf, Porirua Harbour).
