Rope Best Sellers: The Dyneema, Winch Lines, Twines and Cray Rope Kiwis Are Buying Now
With the days getting longer, plenty of Kiwis are re-rigging boats, sorting out winch lines on the ute and getting cray pots ready for the water. So we've dug back through our real orders from the last 90 days to see which ropes from our Rope | Cordage range are actually moving. We've already covered the big names like manila and Pro-Manila in earlier round-ups, so this time we're looking at the next wave of genuine best sellers — the high-performance lines, the handy twines and a couple of full reels and coils for bigger jobs.
Quick heads-up: a good chunk of our rope is cut to length and sold by the metre, so you only pay for what you need. Where something comes as a reel, spool or coil, we've said so.
1. Fineline Advantage Dyneema Rope — strength in a skinny line
This was the busiest performance rope in our orders over the last three months. Fineline Advantage Dyneema Rope is a double braid with a Dyneema SK78 core and a polyester cover, so you get high strength and very low stretch in a small diameter, with a cover that stands up to abrasion and UV. Sailors buy it for control lines and precise rigging, and it gets picked up for offshore and industrial jobs too. It comes in 2mm to 6mm in a big choice of colours, cut by the metre from $1.20 per metre. More in high-performance yachting ropes.
2. Donaghys Winchline UHM12 4mm — the lightweight winch rope
Synthetic winch rope keeps growing in popularity, and the Winchline UHM12 4mm is one of our steady sellers. It's a 12-plait single braid with an abrasion-resistant coating that grips the winch drum, it won't kink, it's easy to splice, and it's far lighter to handle than wire. People use it for strops, small winch lines, pulling and stringing lines, and recovery set-ups. It's $2.50 per metre, and if you need something beefier the 5mm version is $4.12 per metre. See the full line-up in winch lines and soft shackles.
3. Nylon Flat Braided Twine — the handy one
Every shed needs a spool of good twine. Nylon Flat Braided Twine is 100% virgin nylon with no core, so it braids flat and holds knots really well. It's UV, water and rot resistant, and comes in natural white or black from 1mm to 4.5mm. Customers use it for guy ropes, tying up plants and trees, lashing small items and loads of other jobs around the property and the boat. It's sold as a 1kg spool from $39.99. 4. Fineline Classic Polyester Yacht Braid 100m Reel — rig the whole boat
If you're re-rigging properly, buying by the reel makes a lot of sense. The Fineline Classic Polyester Yacht Braid 100m Reel is a double braid made from high-tenacity polyester, aimed at cruiser-racers, club sailors and anyone looking after more than one boat. It runs from 4mm for light control lines right up to 22mm for heavy sheets and halyards, in a range of colours so you can tell your lines apart on deck. A 100m reel starts from $99 (price goes up with diameter). More in Fineline classic double braid rope.
5. Duradan Candy Cray Fishing Rope — built for cray pots
Our headline coil this round is the Duradan Candy Cray Fishing Rope. It's NZ made for NZ conditions, a heavy-duty commercial-grade cray pot rope made from a 50/50 blend of Duradan and staple PE yarns for strength and abrasion resistance, and it's UV resistant. It suits both shallow and deep water. It comes in 10mm, 11mm, 12mm and 14mm on 220m coils, from $190 a coil, and the product page lists the breaking load for each size. It comes in multiple colours, so check with us on what's currently available. See the rest of our commercial cray pot fishing rope.
