Manila Rope Sample

Order a small Sample of Manila Rope to see if it is the correct Diameter you are after.

The Diameter of the Manila Rope is based on when it is under Working Tension and being used.

Manila rope is an excellent choice for those seeking a high-quality, robust, durable rope. It’s made from natural fibres, such as hemp or manila hemp, and can be used in many different applications, such as mooring lines, dock lines, tow ropes and general-purpose use. Sailors have used manila rope for centuries, and it is often preferred because of its strength and durability.

We have a selection of Manila rope samples available in various diameters, suitable for multiple applications. All our rope samples are designed for wet or dry conditions, with heavy-duty core strands providing added strength and superior abrasion resistance.

Care of Manila Rope:

  • Manila rope is very durable, flexible, and resistant to saltwater damage, allowing its use in the string, hawsers, ships' lines, and fishing nets.
  • It can also make handicrafts like bags, carpets, clothing, and furniture.
  • Manila ropes shrink in length when they become wet. This effect can be advantageous under certain circumstances but should be considered if it is not a wanted feature.
  • As shrinkage is more pronounced the first time the rope is wet, the new string is usually immersed in water and dried before use so that the shrinkage is less than it would be if the rope had never been wet.
  • A significant disadvantage in this shrinkage is that many knots made with manila rope became more brutal and more difficult to untie when wet, thus becoming subject of increased stress.
If you use it for Landscaping Projects, please read and note the following information regarding measuring your Manila Rope.

Natural ropes generally shrink 10 to 15 per cent in length - temporarily, until they dry out - whenever it rains.

Natural ropes also tend to run oversize in diameter, so we suggest you get your rope first, then drill the holes.

Suggested minimum sizes - 1 1/2inch hole for 1inch rope, 1 7/8inch hole for 1 1/4inch rope, 2 1/4inch holes for 1 1/2inch, 3inch holes for 2inch ropes

Why so big?

Because when the rope shrinks in length, it increases in diameter. So if after it rains, the Rope doesn't have room to 'breathe' and dry out completely where it's going through the holes, it will rot in those spots.

If you're planning to replace old Manila rope, the following info is essential.
  • If the old rope measures 2 inches in diameter, it probably did not start as a 2-inch rope. It is more likely 1- 1/2-inch rope that has swelled up over time to 2 inches.
  • Accordingly, if it measures 3 inches in diameter, it was almost indeed 2 inches when it was new. So if you're putting new rope through existing holes, measure the holes, then place your order based on the above guidelines.
  • Again, moisture will collect in those spots if the rope barely fits through the holes and fail before it's time.
