About NZ Eels

Two Main Species: Shortfin & Longfin eels.
Habitat:
Longfin Eels – Found throughout New Zealand, mainly in rivers and inland lakes, often far inland from the coast.
Shortfin Eels – More common in lowland lakes, swamps, and slower-flowing waters.
Life Cycle:
Elvers (young eels) migrate upstream, even climbing waterfalls and dams up to 20m by wriggling over damp surfaces.
Shortfin eels mature and migrate to breed after 15–30 years.
Longfin eels can live 25–80 years before migrating to the Pacific Ocean to spawn and die.
Behaviour: Eels are secretive, nocturnal, and prefer waters with plenty of cover.
