Flounder Nets NZ — Ready-to-Fish Set Nets & Drag Nets

Want to buy a flounder net in New Zealand? Action Outdoors manufactures ready-to-fish flounder nets in our Auckland factory. Every net is fully rigged with floating top rope, braided lead-core bottom rope, and quality mesh — ready to fish straight out of the bag.

Flounder netting is one of the most accessible ways to put fresh fish on the table in NZ. You don't need a boat — just a net, a pair of waders, and a shallow harbour or estuary. Our nets are designed to help you catch more flounder with less effort.

Why Choose a Flounder Net?

  • Save money — catch fresh flounder instead of paying supermarket prices
  • Feed the family — healthy, protein-rich fish straight from the water
  • No boat needed — perfect for shore-based fishing in harbours and bays
  • Great family activity — kids love helping set and pull nets
  • Low-cost investment — pays for itself after a few good catches

Flounder Net Types

We make two main types of flounder fishing nets:

Flounder Set Nets — anchored in position and left to fish. Ideal for harbours, estuaries, and tidal channels where flounder move with the tide. Available with floating top rope or floats-on-rope options for different water depths.

Flounder Drag Nets — pulled along the bottom in shallow water. Extra floats and heavier lead-core rope keep the net working efficiently while dragging. Perfect for beaches and sandbars. View our Flounder Drag Nets.

Sizes & Lengths

  • 20m — compact, easy to handle in small estuaries
  • 30m — popular all-round size for recreational fishing
  • 40m — covers more ground in wider harbours
  • 60m — for experienced fishers and larger waterways
  • Custom commercial lengths — built to order for commercial operations

Mesh Sizes

Our flounder net mesh sizes range from 118mm (4¾") to 165mm (6½"). The most common choices:

  • 118mm–125mm — standard recreational flounder mesh, legal in most NZ areas
  • 135mm–165mm — larger mesh for bigger flounder and commercial use
  • South Island specs — 9-mesh-deep nets available for Canterbury/Otago regulations

Mesh Options

  • Mono mesh — clear, hard to see underwater, best for clear water
  • Multi-mono mesh — softer, tangles fish better, 20–40% higher catch rate
  • Cotton/nylon braid — traditional heavy-duty mesh for drag nets

About Flounder in New Zealand

Flounder thrive in shallow waters up to 50m deep, especially in harbours, estuaries, and muddy bays. They're most abundant in northern inshore areas during summer. Common NZ species include Yellowbelly Flounder (plumper with large dark-edged scales) and Sand Flounder. Flounder are bottom feeders that lie flat on the seabed — that's why the weighted bottom rope on your net is so important.

Why Buy From Action Outdoors?

  • NZ made in Auckland — manufactured right here, not imported
  • Ready to fish — fully rigged, just add water
  • MPI compliant — built to meet current NZ fishing regulations
  • Custom sizes — any length or mesh available on request
  • Best nets, best price — factory direct, no middleman markup

Flounder Net FAQ

What mesh size flounder net do I need in NZ?

For most NZ recreational fishing areas, 118mm to 125mm mesh is standard for flounder nets. South Island areas like Canterbury and Otago may require specific mesh sizes and net depths (9 meshes deep). Always check MPI fishing rules for your area.

Set net or drag net for flounder — which is better?

Set nets work best in harbours and estuaries where flounder follow predictable tidal routes. Drag nets are better for beaches and shallow sandbars where you can actively herd fish. Many fishers own both types for different conditions.

What size flounder net should I buy?

30m to 40m is the most popular size for recreational flounder fishing in NZ. 20m nets work for small estuaries and tight spots. 60m nets cover more ground but are heavier to handle.

Mono or multi-mono mesh — what's the difference?

Mono mesh is clear and nearly invisible underwater — great for clear water. Multi-mono mesh is made from multiple strands twisted together, creating a softer mesh that tangles fish more effectively. Multi-mono typically catches 20–40% more fish than single mono.
