What Does a 5 Micron Carbon Block Filter Do?

A carbon block cartridge combines physical filtration with activated carbon treatment, allowing a single cartridge to perform multiple jobs.

Fine Sediment Filtration

The 5 micron filtration captures fine suspended sediment as water passes through the cartridge, helping deliver cleaner water downstream.

Chlorine Reduction

Activated carbon reduces chlorine in treated water, making carbon block cartridges particularly useful for mains-water and drinking-water filtration.

Taste & Odour Improvement

Activated carbon adsorbs compounds responsible for unpleasant tastes and odours, helping produce better-tasting and better-smelling drinking water.

Additional Contaminant Reduction

The Premium Davey ACB10 also reduces pesticides and dissolved chemicals, providing broader treatment alongside sediment, chlorine, taste and odour reduction.

Standard vs Premium — Which Should I Choose?

Choose Standard Waimana if:

You want:

  • Waimana 10CTOS
  • 5 micron filtration
  • Activated carbon block media
  • 15 L/min flow rate
  • 5–45°C operating temperature
  • Reliable everyday carbon filtration
  • Strong value for routine water treatment

Choose Premium Davey if:

You want:

  • Davey Microlene ACB10
  • 5 micron nominal filtration
  • High-capacity powdered bonded activated carbon
  • Chlorine reduction
  • Taste and odour improvement
  • Pesticide and chemical reduction
  • 22,700 L treatment capacity
  • 3.8 L/min optimal treatment flow
  • FDA-grade materials
  • Hot-water capability up to 82.2°C

The Premium option is about greater documented treatment capability and carbon capacity, rather than simply a higher flow rate.

Best Suited For

These cartridges are ideal for:

  • Drinking-water filtration
  • Mains-water filtration
  • Under-bench filtration systems
  • Point-of-use filtration
  • Final-stage carbon filtration
  • Chlorine reduction
  • Taste and odour improvement
  • Fine sediment filtration
  • Beverage applications
  • Food-industry applications
  • Compatible 10" Standard filter housings

The Premium Davey ACB10 is also suited to mineral-water bottling, laboratory use and other fine-filtration applications where low contamination levels and reduction of dissolved chemicals are required.

Installation

These cartridges are designed for compatible 10" Standard water filter housings.

To replace the cartridge:

  1. Turn off the water supply.
  2. Release pressure from the filter housing.
  3. Unscrew and remove the housing sump.
  4. Remove the existing cartridge.
  5. Clean the inside of the housing if required.
  6. Check that the O-ring is clean and correctly seated.
  7. Install the new carbon block cartridge.
  8. Reassemble the housing.
  9. Slowly restore the water supply.
  10. Check the housing for leaks.
  11. Flush the new cartridge before using the water for drinking.

Sediment Prefiltration

For water with higher sediment levels, use a sediment prefilter before the carbon block cartridge.

A separate sediment cartridge captures suspended particles before they reach the carbon block, helping protect the carbon media from premature clogging and maximise cartridge life.

A common two-stage configuration is:

Sediment Filter → Carbon Block Filter

This lets the first cartridge handle the bulk of the sediment while the carbon block concentrates on finer filtration and water treatment.

Flushing After Installation

Always flush a new carbon cartridge after installation.

For the Premium Davey ACB10, run water through the cartridge for at least 5 minutes after installation to clear loose carbon fines.

For ongoing drinking-water use, flush for approximately 20 seconds before use after the system has been sitting.

Maintenance & Replacement

Cartridge life depends on:

  • Incoming water quality
  • Sediment loading
  • Water consumption
  • Chlorine and chemical loading
  • Flow through the cartridge

A noticeable reduction in water flow, taste or overall water quality can indicate that the cartridge is approaching replacement.

The Premium Davey ACB10 provides a treatment capacity of up to 22,700 litres, with actual service life depending on incoming water conditions and usage.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between the Waimana and Davey options?

Both are 10" Standard 5 micron carbon block cartridges designed to combine fine filtration with carbon treatment.

The Waimana 10CTOS is the Standard option, with activated carbon block media and a flow rate of 15 L/min.

The Davey Microlene ACB10 is the Premium option, using high-capacity powdered bonded activated carbon to reduce chlorine, taste, odour, pesticides, chemicals and sediment, with a treatment capacity of up to 22,700 litres.

Does this filter reduce chlorine?

Yes. Activated carbon treatment is used to reduce chlorine in water, helping improve its taste and odour.

Does it improve taste and odour?

Yes. Carbon block filtration helps reduce compounds responsible for unpleasant tastes and odours.

Does it filter sediment?

Yes. Both cartridges provide 5 micron filtration, allowing them to capture fine suspended sediment while also providing carbon treatment.

What is the Waimana flow rate?

The Waimana 10CTOS has a flow rate of up to 15 L/min.

What is the Davey flow rate?

The Davey ACB10 has an optimal treatment flow rate of 3.8 L/min.

Why is the Davey Premium option rated at a lower flow?

The two figures aren't directly comparable.

The 3.8 L/min Davey figure represents its optimal treatment flow rate, while the 15 L/min Waimana figure is its cartridge flow-rate specification.

The Davey Premium option is positioned around its high-capacity bonded carbon media, broader contaminant reduction and 22,700 L treatment capacity.

What contaminants does the Davey ACB10 reduce?

The ACB10 reduces:

  • Chlorine
  • Taste
  • Odour
  • Pesticides
  • Chemicals
  • Sediment

What is the Davey ACB10 treatment capacity?

The Davey ACB10 provides a treatment capacity of up to 22,700 litres.

Can the Davey ACB10 be used with hot water?

Yes. The ACB10 can operate at temperatures up to 82.2°C.

Should I install a sediment filter before the carbon block?

For water with higher sediment levels, yes.

A sediment prefilter removes suspended particles before they reach the carbon block, helping reduce premature clogging and extend the useful life of the carbon cartridge.

Is this a Jumbo cartridge?

No. These are 10" Standard cartridges.

If you have a wider Jumbo housing, choose a 10" Jumbo carbon block cartridge instead.
