  • Manila rope is very durable, flexible, and resistant to saltwater damage, allowing its use in rope, hawsers, ships' lines, and fishing nets. It can also make handicrafts like bags, carpets, clothing, and furniture.
  • It comes in sizes 4mm, 6mm, 8mm, 10mm 12mm 14mm, 16mm, 18mm, 20mm, 24mm, 28mm, 32mm, 36mm, 40mm, 44mm 48mm 56mm Dia
  • Manila ropes shrink in length when they become wet. This effect can be advantageous under certain circumstances, but it should be considered if it is not a desired feature.
  • Since shrinkage is more pronounced the first time the rope becomes wet, the new rope is usually immersed in water and put to dry before use so that the shrinkage is less than it would be if the rope had never been wet.
  • A major disadvantage of this shrinkage is that many knots made with manila rope become harder and more difficult to untie when wet, thus causing increased stress.

If using it for Landscaping Projects, then please read and note the following information regarding measuring your Manila Rope.

Natural ropes generally shrink 10 to 15 per cent in length - temporarily, until they dry out - whenever it rains. Natural ropes also tend to run oversize in diameter, so we suggest you get your rope first, then drill the holes. Suggested minimum sizes - 1 1/2inch hole for 1inch rope, 1 7/8inch hole for 1 1/4inch rope, 2 1/4inch holes for 1 1/2inch, 3inch holes for 2inch ropes

Why so big?

When the rope shrinks in length, it increases in diameter. So if after it rains, the rope doesn't have room to 'breathe' and dry out completely where it's going through the holes, it will rot in those spots.

If you plan to replace old Manila rope, the following is very important.
  • If the old rope measures 2 inches in diameter, it probably did not start out as 2 inches. It is more likely 1 1/2 inches rope that has swelled up over time to 2 inches. Accordingly, if it measures 3 inches in diameter, it was almost surely 2 inches when it was new. So, if you're putting new rope through existing holes, be sure to measure the holes, then place your order based on the above guidelines.
  • Again, if the rope barely fits through the holes, moisture will collect in those spots, and the rope will fail before it's too late.
