This Manila Rope Sold by the Metre is a versatile natural rope suitable for ships’ lines, fishing nets, hawsers, mooring, and decorative or landscaping installations. It’s also popular for handicrafts, garden edging, swing ropes, rustic furniture, and architectural design.
💧 Important: Rope Shrinkage and Installation Tips
Manila rope naturally shrinks in length by 10 – 15 % when wet. This can be advantageous in some cases (e.g., tightening when soaked), but it should always be considered during installation. Most shrinkage occurs the first time the rope becomes wet, so many professionals immerse and dry the rope before use to reduce future movement.
Natural ropes are also slightly oversized in diameter, so when using Manila rope in landscaping or architectural projects (e.g., threading through posts), we recommend drilling larger holes than the rope’s stated size.
📐 Suggested Minimum Hole Sizes
- 1 ½″ hole for 1″ rope
- 1 ⅞″ hole for 1 ¼″ rope
- 2 ¼″ hole for 1 ½″ rope
- 3″ hole for 2″ rope
This extra clearance allows the rope to “breathe” and dry properly, preventing moisture from getting trapped inside the post and causing rot over time.
📝 Replacing Old Manila Rope
When replacing old Manila ropes, don’t rely solely on the rope’s current diameter. Over time, Manila rope swells:
- A 2″ rope today may have started as 1 ½″ when new.
- A 3″ rope may have started as 2″.
If the new rope barely fits through the holes, moisture will collect at those points, shortening the rope’s life. Always measure the hole size and order the rope based on the original specification, not the current swollen size.
🧼 Care of Manila Rope
To extend the life of your Manila Rope Sold by the Metre:
- Pre-soak and dry before installation to minimise future shrinkage.
- Allow room for expansion in fittings or drilled holes.
- Store in a dry, well-ventilated area when not in use.
- Avoid prolonged contact with damp surfaces to prevent mildew.
When properly cared for, Manila rope can last for many years, maintaining both its strength and classic natural look.
