5 Micron — MATRIKX CTO
The MATRIKX CTO 5 Micron Jumbo Carbon Block Cartridge provides high-capacity carbon treatment while maintaining strong flow characteristics for larger water systems.
It reduces:
- Chlorine
- Unpleasant taste
- Odour
- PFAS
- Chloramine
- Fine particulate matter
With more than 136,500 litres of chlorine reduction capacity at 11.4 L/min, the CTO is well suited to whole-house and main-line filtration where high treatment capacity and good flow are important.
Its 5 micron nominal rating provides effective particulate filtration while maintaining a lower pressure drop than the finer CTO Plus.

What Does This Carbon Block Filter Do?
The MATRIKX CTO range combines activated carbon treatment with particulate filtration.
Chlorine, Taste & Odour Reduction
The coconut shell activated carbon adsorbs chlorine and compounds responsible for unpleasant tastes and odours, helping improve drinking-water quality throughout the system.
Both the CTO and CTO Plus provide chlorine, taste and odour reduction.
PFAS Reduction
Both options provide PFAS reduction.
The 5 micron CTO provides more than 36,900 litres at 5.6 L/min, while the 1 micron CTO Plus provides more than 39,700 litres at 5.6 L/min.
These capacities are based on >95% reduction at 1500 ppt under the stated test conditions.
Chloramine Reduction
Both cartridges also reduce chloramine.
The CTO provides more than 11,400 litres at 5.6 L/min, while the CTO Plus provides more than 22,800 litres at 5.6 L/min.
VOC Reduction — CTO Plus
The 1 Micron CTO Plus adds VOC reduction.
It provides more than 8,500 litres of VOC reduction capacity at 5.6 L/min.
If VOC reduction is required, choose the CTO Plus.
Why Choose the 10" Jumbo Size?
The 4.5" Jumbo diameter gives the cartridge substantially more carbon media than a standard 10" × 2.75" filter.
That added media provides:
- Higher treatment capacity
- Greater flow capability
- Longer service life
- Better suitability for main water lines
- Better suitability for whole-house filtration
- Lower restriction for a given treatment demand
This makes the Jumbo format a strong choice where flow and capacity matter more than compact size.
Why Choose MATRIKX CTO?
- Premium carbon block filtration
- 100% coconut shell activated carbon
- Renewable carbon source
- Reduces chlorine
- Improves unpleasant taste and odour
- PFAS reduction
- Chloramine reduction
- Choice of 5 or 1 micron nominal filtration
- CTO Plus provides VOC reduction
- Fits compatible 10" Jumbo / Big Blue open-sump housings
- NSF/ANSI 42 and WQA Standard 42 material-safety certification

5 Micron vs 1 Micron — Which Should I Choose?
Choose 5 Micron CTO if:
You want:
- 5 micron nominal filtration
- Chlorine reduction
- Taste and odour improvement
- PFAS reduction
- Chloramine reduction
- Good flow
- Lower pressure drop
- High-capacity whole-house carbon treatment
The CTO is a strong choice for general carbon filtration where VOC reduction and 1 micron filtration are not required.
Choose 1 Micron CTO Plus if:
You want:
- Finer 1 micron nominal filtration
- Chlorine reduction
- Taste and odour improvement
- PFAS reduction
- Chloramine reduction
- VOC reduction
- Greater chlorine treatment capacity
- Finer particulate filtration
The CTO Plus is suited to systems where broader contaminant reduction and finer filtration are priorities.

Sustainable Coconut Shell Carbon
Both cartridges use 100% coconut shell activated carbon.
Coconut shell is a renewable material and provides the large surface area needed for effective adsorption within the carbon block.
The cartridges also carry WQA S-803 sustainability certification and are manufactured in an ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certified facility.
Best Suited For
These cartridges are well suited to:
- Whole-house water filtration
- Main water line filtration
- Mains-water treatment
- High-demand drinking-water systems
- Chlorinated water
- Chloraminated water
- PFAS reduction
- Taste and odour improvement
- Fine particulate filtration
- VOC reduction with the CTO Plus
- Compatible 10" Jumbo / Big Blue housings
Important Water Quality Requirement
These cartridges are designed for use with microbiologically safe and adequately disinfected water.
They are not a disinfection device and should not be relied upon to make microbiologically unsafe water safe to drink.
Tank, bore and other untreated supplies may require appropriate disinfection such as UV treatment depending on the incoming water quality and intended use.

Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between CTO and CTO Plus?
The CTO is a 5 micron nominal carbon block that reduces chlorine, taste, odour, PFAS and chloramine.
The CTO Plus provides finer 1 micron nominal filtration and adds VOC reduction, while also reducing chlorine, taste, odour, PFAS and chloramine.
Which option is better for whole-house filtration?
Both can be used in whole-house systems.
Choose the 5 Micron CTO where good flow, lower pressure drop and general carbon treatment are the priority.
Choose the 1 Micron CTO Plus where finer filtration and VOC reduction are more important.
Does this filter reduce PFAS?
Yes. Both options provide PFAS reduction.
CTO: >36,900 L @ 5.6 L/min
CTO Plus: >39,700 L @ 5.6 L/min
These figures are based on >95% reduction at 1500 ppt under the stated test conditions.
Does it reduce chloramine?
Yes.
CTO: >11,400 L @ 5.6 L/min
CTO Plus: >22,800 L @ 5.6 L/min
Does it reduce chlorine?
Yes.
The CTO provides more than 136,500 litres of chlorine reduction capacity at 11.4 L/min.
The CTO Plus provides more than 456,500 litres at 11.4 L/min.
Does it reduce VOCs?
Choose the 1 Micron CTO Plus if you need VOC reduction.
The CTO Plus provides more than 8,500 litres of VOC reduction capacity at 5.6 L/min.
What is the pressure drop?
At 3 gpm:
CTO 5 Micron: 4 psid
CTO Plus 1 Micron: 7 psid
The finer CTO Plus therefore creates more pressure drop than the 5 micron CTO at the same test flow.
Why choose Jumbo instead of Standard?
The 4.5" Jumbo cartridge contains more carbon media than a standard 2.75" cartridge.
That gives it greater treatment capacity and makes it more suitable for whole-house and higher-demand systems.
Is the carbon made from coconut shell?
Yes. Both cartridges use 100% coconut shell activated carbon.
Will it fit my 10" Big Blue housing?
It fits compatible 10" Jumbo / Big Blue open-sump housings.
The cartridge dimensions are approximately 4½" × 9¾" (114 × 248mm).
Will it fit a standard slim 10" housing?
No. This is the larger 4.5" diameter Jumbo / Big Blue format.
For a slim Standard housing, use the corresponding 2.75" MATRIKX cartridge.
Can I use it with tank or bore water?
Only where the water is microbiologically safe and adequately disinfected.
These carbon blocks do not provide disinfection.
How often should I replace it?
Replacement depends on incoming water quality, contaminant levels, usage and flow rate.
Use the treatment capacities as a guide and replace the cartridge when performance declines or flow becomes excessively restricted.
