Actual cartridge life and treatment performance depend on incoming water quality, flow rate, contaminant levels and system design.

5 Micron — MATRIKX CTO

The MATRIKX CTO 5 Micron Carbon Block Cartridge is designed for high-capacity carbon filtration while maintaining good flow and relatively low pressure drop.

It reduces:

  • Chlorine
  • Unpleasant taste
  • Odour
  • PFAS
  • Chloramine
  • Fine particulate matter

With a chlorine reduction capacity of more than 45,000 litres at 3.8 L/min, the CTO provides substantial treatment capacity in a compact 10" Standard cartridge.

Its 5 micron nominal rating and lower pressure drop make it an excellent choice where you want effective carbon treatment without moving to the finer 1 micron filtration of the CTO Plus.

What Does This Carbon Block Filter Do?

MATRIKX CTO carbon block cartridges combine fine particulate filtration with activated carbon treatment.

Chlorine, Taste & Odour Reduction

Coconut shell activated carbon adsorbs chlorine and compounds responsible for unpleasant tastes and odours, helping improve the quality of drinking water.

Both the CTO and CTO Plus provide chlorine, taste and odour reduction.

PFAS Reduction

Both options provide PFAS reduction.

The 5 micron CTO provides more than 12,300 litres at 1.9 L/min, while the 1 micron CTO Plus provides more than 13,200 litres at 1.9 L/min.

These capacities are based on >95% reduction at 1500 ppt under the stated test conditions.

Chloramine Reduction

Both cartridges also reduce chloramine.

The CTO provides more than 3,800 litres at 1.9 L/min, while the CTO Plus increases chloramine treatment capacity to more than 7,600 litres at 3.8 L/min.

VOC Reduction — CTO Plus

The 1 Micron CTO Plus adds VOC reduction to its treatment capabilities.

It provides a VOC reduction capacity of more than 2,800 litres at 1.9 L/min.

If VOC reduction is important for your application, choose the CTO Plus.

Sustainable Coconut Shell Carbon

Both cartridges use 100% coconut shell activated carbon.

Coconut shell is a renewable source material and provides the high surface area required for effective adsorption within the carbon block.

The cartridges also hold WQA S-803 sustainability certification and are manufactured in an ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certified facility.

Best Suited For

These cartridges are well suited to:

  • Drinking-water filtration
  • Mains-water filtration
  • Under-sink filtration
  • Point-of-use filtration
  • Chlorinated water
  • Chloraminated water
  • PFAS reduction
  • Taste and odour improvement
  • Fine particulate filtration
  • VOC reduction with the CTO Plus
  • Compatible 10" Standard filter housings

Important Water Quality Requirement

These cartridges are designed for use with microbiologically safe and adequately disinfected water.

They are not a disinfection device and should not be relied upon to make microbiologically unsafe water safe to drink.

Tank, bore and other untreated water supplies may require an appropriate disinfection stage, such as UV treatment, depending on the water quality and intended use.

Certifications

The MATRIKX CTO range includes:

  • NSF/ANSI 42 material-safety certification
  • WQA Standard 42 material-safety certification
  • WQA S-803 sustainability certification
  • Manufacture in an ISO 9001 certified facility
  • Manufacture in an ISO 14001 certified facility
  • California Proposition 65 compliance

The NSF/ANSI 42 and WQA Standard 42 certifications referenced here apply to material safety, rather than certification of the individual contaminant-reduction capacities listed above.

Installation

These cartridges fit compatible 10" Standard open-sump filter housings.

To replace the cartridge:

  1. Turn off the water supply.
  2. Release pressure from the filter housing.
  3. Unscrew and remove the housing sump.
  4. Remove the existing cartridge.
  5. Clean the housing as required.
  6. Check that the housing O-ring is clean and correctly seated.
  7. Install the selected MATRIKX cartridge.
  8. Reassemble the housing.
  9. Slowly restore the water supply.
  10. Check carefully for leaks.
  11. Flush the new cartridge before drinking the water.

Maintenance & Replacement

Cartridge life depends on:

  • Incoming water quality
  • Water consumption
  • Chlorine concentration
  • Chloramine concentration
  • PFAS concentration
  • VOC concentration where applicable
  • Flow rate
  • Particulate loading

The capacity figures provide useful guidance, but actual service life will vary according to the application.

Replace the cartridge when treatment performance declines, taste or odour returns, flow becomes excessively restricted, or the cartridge reaches the appropriate service interval for your system.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between CTO and CTO Plus?

The CTO is a 5 micron nominal carbon block that reduces chlorine, taste, odour, PFAS and chloramine.

The CTO Plus provides finer 1 micron nominal filtration and adds VOC reduction, while also reducing chlorine, taste, odour, PFAS and chloramine.

Which option should I choose for general drinking-water filtration?

For general chlorine, taste, odour, PFAS and chloramine reduction with lower pressure drop, choose the 5 Micron CTO.

For finer filtration and additional VOC reduction, choose the 1 Micron CTO Plus.

Does this filter reduce PFAS?

Yes. Both options provide PFAS reduction.

CTO: >12,300 L @ 1.9 L/min
CTO Plus: >13,200 L @ 1.9 L/min

These figures are based on >95% reduction at 1500 ppt under the stated test conditions.

Does it reduce chloramine?

Yes.

CTO: >3,800 L @ 1.9 L/min
CTO Plus: >7,600 L @ 3.8 L/min

Does it reduce chlorine?

Yes.

The CTO provides more than 45,000 litres of chlorine reduction capacity at 3.8 L/min.

The CTO Plus provides more than 114,000 litres at 3.8 L/min.

Does it reduce VOCs?

Choose the 1 Micron CTO Plus if you require VOC reduction.

The CTO Plus provides more than 2,800 litres of VOC reduction capacity at 1.9 L/min.

VOC reduction is not listed for the standard CTO variant.

What is the pressure drop?

At 1 gpm:

CTO 5 Micron: 3 psid
CTO Plus 1 Micron: 5 psid

The finer CTO Plus therefore has a higher pressure drop than the 5 micron CTO.

Is the carbon made from coconut shell?

Yes. Both cartridges use 100% coconut shell activated carbon.

Will this fit a standard 10" filter housing?

It fits compatible 10" Standard open-sump housings.

The cartridge dimensions are approximately 2¾" × 9¾" (70 × 248mm).

It is not a 4.5" diameter Jumbo / Big Blue cartridge.

Can I use it with tank or bore water?

Only where the water is microbiologically safe and adequately disinfected.

These carbon cartridges do not provide disinfection. Untreated tank or bore water may require additional treatment such as UV.

Does NSF certification mean the PFAS and chloramine performance is NSF certified?

No. The NSF/ANSI 42 and WQA Standard 42 certifications referenced for these cartridges cover material safety requirements.

They should not be interpreted as NSF certification of the PFAS, chloramine or other performance capacities listed on this page.

How often should I replace the cartridge?

There isn't one replacement interval that applies to every installation.

Cartridge life depends on incoming water quality, contaminant levels, water consumption and flow rate.

Use the applicable treatment capacities as a guide and replace the cartridge when treatment performance declines or flow becomes excessively restricted.
