Knives Best Sellers: The Hunting Sets, Butchers Knives and Sharpening Gear Kiwis Are Buying Now

A good knife is only half the story. Keeping it sharp, carrying it safely and having the right blade for the job matter just as much, and our recent orders show plenty of Kiwis know it. We went back through the last 90 days of sales in our Knives range to see what's actually selling, and alongside the knives themselves we found a whetstone and a leather knife wrap near the top of the list. Here are five genuine recent best sellers, from a full hunting and boning set to a classic Buck folder.

1. Victory Hunting Skinning Boning Knife Set Blue

Victory hunting skinning boning knife set with blue Progrip handles

This is the set for anyone who processes their own game or does home kill. The 5 piece set includes a 10cm rabbiter knife, a 12cm narrow curved boner with running tip, a 17cm skinning knife, a Progrip sheep skinning knife and a 15cm curved boning knife, all with soft blue thermoplastic handles and an integral guard to help keep fingers off the blade. You can step up to a 6 piece version, and choose a canvas roll or a 5 or 11 pocket leather wrap. It covers the whole job, from skinning through to boning out, in one kit.

Price: from $215 (5 piece with canvas roll; bigger sets and leather wraps cost more) - Victory hunting skinning boning knife set blue. More in Victory knife sets and Progrip blue butchers knives.

This finger grooved version has a 9.5cm 420HC stainless steel blade, a lockback design with a nail notch for easy opening and closing, a Macassar ebony handle and a black leather sheath. Hunters buy it as the one dependable folder on the belt, and it's a classic gift.

3. Victory Bullnose Butchers Knife 22cm

For cutting steaks and breaking down bigger cuts of sheep, beef or pork, the bullnose is the knife butchers reach for. The rounded tip and long 22cm blade make clean slicing cuts, which is why home kill customers and people who work in the trade keep buying it. It's made in New Zealand by Victory Knives from German stainless steel, Victory has been making knives here since 1927, and every knife comes with a lifetime guarantee (it doesn't cover misuse or normal wear).

Price: $65.99 - Bullnose butchers knife 22cm. See the full range of Victory butchers knives.

4. 1000/3000 Grit Double Sided Water Stone

Double sided 1000 and 3000 grit water stone for knife sharpening

Sharpening gear is a steady seller, and this double sided whetstone is the pick of it right now. The 1000 grit side is for coarse grinding, bringing back a seriously blunt or damaged edge, and the 3000 grit side is the finer step that removes the burr and leaves a cleaner edge. Soak it for 5 minutes before use, then wipe it clean and let it dry afterwards.

Price: $58.99 - 1000G to 3000G water stone double sided. More stones and steels in Cambrian and Flugel sharpening steels.

5. Victory Leather Knife Wrap - 5 Pockets

This Victory wrap is made from quality leather, with a suede front flap and two buckles to keep everything secure when you're travelling or when the knives are put away. Please note this is the wrap only; knives are sold separately.

Price: $99.99 - Victory leather knife wrap 5 pockets. More sheaths and wraps in sharpening steels & knife accessories and leather sheaths & knife storage.
