This DIY Flounder Net kit is built around commercial-grade Multi Mono mesh with floats threaded onto the top rope, giving you buoyancy exactly where you space it and an easy net to handle, wash and store. Specifications

Floats on the top rope, or a floating top rope?

Both keep the headline up — they just do it differently. Floats on the top rope put the lift at set points, so the net stands in tall arches, sheds weed easily and is quick to dry and roll up. A floating top rope lifts evenly along the whole length instead. If you're netting sheltered harbours and estuaries, floats on the rope are the traditional Kiwi setup and the easier of the two to repair.

Tips for a net that fishes

• Sling loose — we make our own nets at a 50% slinging ratio (2m of mesh for every 1m of finished net), which is what catches fish. Many imported nets are slung tight at up to 70% to save mesh.
• Allow at least 1kg of anchor per 10m of net at each end, more in a strong tide.
• Best in sheltered water — not suited to surf beaches, dragging, or ground with lots of oysters and shell.
