About NZ Eels

• Two Main Species: Shortfin & Longfin eels.

• Habitat:

  • Longfin Eels – Found throughout New Zealand, mainly in rivers and inland lakes, often far inland from the coast.

  • Shortfin Eels – More common in lowland lakes, swamps, and slower-flowing waters.

• Life Cycle:

  • Elvers (young eels) migrate upstream, even climbing waterfalls and dams up to 20m by wriggling over damp surfaces.

  • Shortfin eels mature and migrate to breed after 15–30 years.

  • Longfin eels can live 25–80 years before migrating to the Pacific Ocean to spawn and die.

• Behaviour: Eels are secretive, nocturnal, and prefer waters with plenty of cover.
