Anchor Rope & Chain NZ — How to Choose the Right Setup for Your Boat

Anchor Rope & Chain NZ — How to Choose the Right Setup for Your Boat

Your anchor system is one of the most critical pieces of safety equipment on your boat. Get it right, and you'll hold securely in any conditions. Get it wrong, and you could end up dragging anchor onto rocks — or worse.

Here's how to choose the right anchor rope and chain combination for NZ boating conditions.

The Three Parts of an Anchor System

1. The Anchor

Plough, Danforth, Bruce, or grapnel — the right type depends on your bottom conditions (sand, mud, rock, weed). We stock Maxwell Maxset plough anchors — proven performers in NZ harbours.

2. Chain

A length of chain between the anchor and rope serves three purposes:

  • Weight — Keeps the pull angle low (horizontal is best for holding)
  • Abrasion resistance — Protects against rocks and coral on the bottom
  • Catenary effect — The chain's sag absorbs shock loads from waves and wind

How much chain? Minimum 3–5 metres for boats under 8m. Larger boats: 6–10m or all-chain for windlass setups.

3. Rope

The main length of your anchor line. Nylon is the standard — it stretches 15–25% under load, which absorbs shock and reduces snatch loads on your cleats.

How Much Anchor Line Do You Need?

The golden rule: scope = 5:1 minimum. That means 5 metres of line for every 1 metre of water depth.

Water Depth 5:1 Scope 7:1 (Rough Weather)
3m 15m 21m
5m 25m 35m
10m 50m 70m
15m 75m 105m

For NZ conditions, we recommend carrying at least 50m total for harbour boating and 80–100m for coastal trips.

Rope Diameter Guide

Boat Length Recommended Nylon
Under 5m 10mm
5–8m 12–14mm
8–12m 14–16mm
12m+ 16–20mm

Splicing Rope to Chain

The best connection between rope and chain is a rope-to-chain splice — stronger than any knot and won't jam in a windlass. We can supply pre-spliced anchor packs or you can use an anchor swivel or shackle as the connection point.
