Build Your Own Trailer NZ — Single & Tandem Axle Trailer Kit Guide (Trojan 2026)

Build Your Own Trailer NZ — Trojan Trailer Kit Guide 2026

Building your own trailer is one of the most satisfying DIY projects going — and with a Trojan trailer kit from Action Outdoors, you've got all the running gear sorted in one box. Here's how to choose the right kit and what to know before you start.

What's in a Trojan Trailer Kit?

A Trojan trailer kit gives you everything you need for the running gear (the bits underneath). You supply the chassis and body. A typical kit includes:

  • Axle(s) — Straight beam or Duratorque, to your chosen weight rating
  • Hub assemblies — Complete with bearings, seals, and dust caps
  • Springs or suspension — Leaf springs with u-bolts, or Duratorque mounts
  • Coupling — 50mm ball coupling (braked or non-braked)
  • Jockey wheel — For parking and manoeuvring
  • Safety chain — With hooks and attachments
  • Mudguards — Galvanised steel or plastic
  • Lights & wiring — LED tail lights and wiring harness

Single Axle vs Tandem Axle

Single Axle Kits

Best for trailers up to about 2000kg GTM. Lighter, cheaper, easier to build, and easier to back into tight spots.

Tandem Axle Kits

For trailers over 2000kg GTM or where you need extra stability. Tandem (twin) axles spread the load across four wheels, giving better road handling and a safety margin if one tyre blows.

Choosing the Right Weight Rating

Every trailer in NZ must display a compliance plate showing its GTM. When building your own:

  1. Estimate your loaded weight — trailer body + maximum payload
  2. Add 20% safety margin
  3. Choose a kit rated at or above that figure
Use Case Typical GTM Kit Type
Garden/general trailer 500–750kg Single axle, non-braked
Small boat trailer (3–4m boat) 750–1200kg Single axle, non-braked
Medium boat trailer (4–5m) 1200–2000kg Single axle, braked
Large boat trailer (5–7m) 2000–3500kg Tandem axle, braked
Car transporter 2500–3500kg Tandem axle, braked

NZ Certification Requirements

In New Zealand, any home-built trailer must be certified before it can be registered for road use. Key requirements:

  • Trailers over 750kg GTM need a Low Volume Vehicle (LVV) certification
  • Trailers under 750kg with simple designs may only need a WoF (Warrant of Fitness)
  • All trailers over 2000kg GTM must have brakes
  • Braked trailers need a breakaway system (automatically applies brakes if the trailer detaches)
  • Lighting must comply with NZ regulations (red rear, amber indicators, white reversing)

We recommend talking to your local LVV certifier before you start building — they can advise on chassis specs and design.
