Cycling Helmets NZ — Safety Guide & Buying Tips (2026)
A helmet is the single most important piece of cycling safety gear. In New Zealand, helmets are legally required for all cyclists. Here's how to choose the right one.
NZ Helmet Law
Under the Land Transport (Road User) Rule 2004, all cyclists in New Zealand must wear an approved helmet while riding on the road. Fines apply for non-compliance.

How to Fit a Cycling Helmet
- Position: Sits level on your head, about 2 finger-widths above your eyebrows
- Straps: Form a V-shape under each ear. Snug but comfortable
- Buckle: 1 finger gap between strap and chin
- Shake test: Shake your head — helmet shouldn't move independently
When to Replace Your Helmet
- After any crash — Even if it looks fine, the foam may be compromised
- Every 3-5 years — UV and sweat degrade materials over time
- If it doesn't fit — A loose helmet won't protect you
