Machetes NZ — Buying Guide for Garden, Bush & Farm

Machetes NZ — Buying Guide for Garden, Bush & Farm (2026)

From clearing scrub on the farm to hacking through bush tracks, a good machete is one of the most useful tools you can own in New Zealand. Here's what to look for.

Types of Machetes

Latin / Bush Machete

The classic straight-blade design. Lightweight, fast, and great for cutting grass, scrub, and light bush.

  • Blade length: 45-60cm
  • Best for: General clearing, garden, farm tracks

Bolo Machete

Weighted towards the tip for extra chopping power. The front-heavy blade bites into thicker material.

  • Best for: Chopping bamboo, thick scrub, splitting kindling

Cane Machete

Heavy-duty with a hook on the back for pulling cut material. Originally designed for sugar cane.

  • Best for: Harvesting, heavy clearing, thick vegetation

Kukri

The legendary Nepalese design with an inward-curving blade. Combines the chopping power of an axe with the cutting ability of a knife.

  • Best for: All-purpose outdoor tool, camping, survival

Machete Maintenance

  • Sharpen regularly — A dull machete is dangerous because you need more force
  • Oil the blade after use to prevent rust (especially carbon steel)
  • Check the handle — Loose handles cause accidents
  • Use a sheath when carrying or storing

NZ Legal Note

Machetes are legal to own and use in NZ as tools. They cannot be carried in public without a reasonable excuse (e.g., going to work on the farm, heading to a clearing job). Like all bladed tools, use common sense.
