Ratchet Tie-Downs NZ — How to Secure Loads on Trucks & Trailers
Ratchet Tie-Downs NZ — How to Secure Loads on Trucks & Trailers
Every year in New Zealand, unsecured loads cause accidents on our roads. Whether you're hauling building materials, boats, vehicles, or equipment, knowing how to properly tie down a load isn't just good practice — it's the law.
NZ Load Securing Rules
Under the Land Transport Rule: Vehicle Dimensions and Mass 2016, all loads must be secured so they:
- Cannot fall off the vehicle
- Cannot shift in a way that affects the vehicle's stability
- Do not obscure the driver's view or lights
Penalties: Up to $10,000 for operators and $2,000 for drivers carrying unsafe loads.
Types of Tie-Downs
Ratchet Straps
The go-to for most loads. A webbing strap with a ratchet mechanism that lets you tension the strap tight and lock it in place.
- 25mm straps — Light loads: kayaks, furniture, small equipment
- 35mm straps — Medium loads: timber, building materials, machinery
- 50mm straps — Heavy loads: vehicles, containers, steel
- 75mm straps — Extra heavy: large machinery, construction equipment
Cam Buckle Straps
Easier to use than ratchets but lower tension. Best for fragile or light loads where you don't want excessive pressure.
Chain Tie-Downs
For heavy equipment, vehicles, and loads that would damage webbing straps. Used with chain tensioners (binders).
How Many Tie-Downs Do You Need?
The general rule:
- 1 strap per 500kg of load weight (minimum 2 straps)
- At least 1 strap for every 2 metres of load length
- Straps should be at roughly 45° angles where possible
- Use edge protectors on sharp corners to prevent strap damage
Transport Safety Chains
When towing trailers, safety chains are compulsory in NZ. They must be rated for the trailer's gross weight and crossed under the tow bar drawbar.
