Resin Art NZ — Complete Beginner's Guide (2026)
Resin art has exploded in New Zealand. From stunning river tables to jewellery, coasters, and wall art — epoxy resin lets you create beautiful, glossy pieces that look professional.
What Is Resin Art?
Resin art uses epoxy resin — a two-part liquid (resin + hardener) that cures into a crystal-clear, glass-like solid. Mix in pigments, pour into moulds, and create almost anything.
Getting Started — What You Need
| Item | Why You Need It |
|---|---|
| Epoxy resin + hardener | The base material — choose casting or coating resin |
| Moulds | Shape your creation — silicone moulds are reusable |
| Pigments / mica powder | Add colour, shimmer, and effects |
| Mixing cups & stir sticks | Accurate measuring and mixing |
| Heat gun or torch | Remove air bubbles from the surface |
| Gloves & mask | Safety — resin is sticky and fumes need ventilation |
| Digital scale | Precise ratios for proper curing |
Types of Resin
Casting Resin
- Best for: Deep pours — river tables, paperweights, moulds
- Pour depth: Up to 13cm in a single pour (deep pour formulas)
- Cure time: 24-72 hours depending on depth
Coating Resin
- Best for: Thin layers — countertops, artwork coating, tumblers
- Pour depth: 3-6mm per layer
- Cure time: 12-24 hours
Polyurethane Resin
- Best for: Fast-cure applications, casting replicas
- Flexible options: Available in rigid and flexible formulas
Top Tips for Beginners
- Measure accurately — Wrong ratios = sticky, uncured resin
- Mix thoroughly — 3-5 minutes of slow stirring, scraping sides
- Work in a warm room — 20-25°C is ideal for curing
- Pop bubbles early — Use a heat gun within 30 minutes of pouring
- Level your surface — Resin self-levels, so your table/mould must be flat
