RV Seat Swivels NZ — The Complete Guide to Sportscraft Motorhome Swivel Bases

RV Seat Swivels in NZ — Everything You Need to Know Before You Buy

A seat swivel (turntable) lets you rotate your driver or passenger seat 180°, turning your motorhome's cab into extra living space. It's one of the most popular upgrades for campervans, motorhomes, and van conversions — but there are important vehicle compatibility, compliance, and safety rules you need to understand first.

⚠️ Disclaimer: All product specifications, vehicle compatibility, and technical details in this guide are sourced from Sportscraft manufacturer data and publicly available NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) guidance. What Is a Seat Swivel?

A seat swivel (also called a turntable or swivel base) is a heavy-duty steel plate that bolts between your vehicle's floor and the seat mounting rail. It allows the seat to rotate — typically 180° — so the occupant faces rearward into the living area when the vehicle is parked.

Why Install a Seat Swivel?

  • Extra seating: Rotate front seats to face the dining table or living area — instant extra seats without adding weight
  • Better use of space: No wasted cab area when parked. Your cab becomes part of the living space
  • Easier entry/exit: Rotate the seat toward the door for easier boarding, especially for people with limited mobility
  • Social seating: Face your passengers for meals, work, or relaxation

⚠️ NZ Compliance & Safety Rules

This is the most important section. Seat swivels modify a safety-critical part of your vehicle. Understanding these rules before you buy could save you from a failed WoF, insurance issues, or — worst case — a safety problem in a crash.

Rule 1: Seats Must Be Locked Forward-Facing While Driving

A swivelled seat is only for use when the vehicle is stationary. When driving, the seat must be locked in the original forward-facing position with the seatbelt properly connected. This applies to all designated seating positions.

Rule 2: Seatbelts Must Remain Functional

Under NZ law (NZTA), motorhomes manufactured or converted after 1 October 2003 must have:

  • Driver's seat: 3-point, dual-sensitive, retractor seatbelt
  • Front passenger seat: 3-point, dual-sensitive, retractor seatbelt
  • The swivel must not interfere with seatbelt anchorage points or belt operation

If a swivel alters seatbelt anchorage geometry, you may need professional assessment or LVV certification.

Rule 3: WoF / CoF Considerations

Seat modifications can affect your Warrant of Fitness (WoF) or Certificate of Fitness (CoF). Before installation:

  • Consult a certified vehicle inspector or LVV (Low Volume Vehicle) certifier
  • Check whether the modification needs formal certification in your region
  • Keep all Sportscraft documentation (TÜV certificates, installation instructions) for the inspector

Rule 4: Single OEM Seats Only

Sportscraft swivels are designed for original manufacturer (OEM) single seats only. They will not fit:

  • Aftermarket or non-OEM seats
  • Double or bench seats
  • Seats with integrated consoles

Rule 5: Airbag Clearance

Ensure the swivel does not interfere with the deployment of any seat-mounted airbags (side-impact, curtain, or seat-integrated). The 44–48mm height increase must also be considered — check clearance above the seat occupant's head.

Rule 6: Height Increase

All swivel bases add 44–48 mm of height to the seat. Before installing, check:

  • Headroom above the driver/passenger position
  • Steering wheel clearance (driver side)
  • Mirror visibility — you may need to readjust mirrors after installation

Quick Compliance Checklist

Check Requirement
✅ Forward-facing lock Seat must lock facing forward when driving
✅ Seatbelt function 3-point belt must work normally after installation
✅ Single OEM seat Swivel fits original manufacturer single seats only
✅ Airbag clearance No interference with seat airbag deployment
✅ Headroom 44–48mm height increase doesn't cause head clearance issues
✅ WoF/CoF check Consult inspector or LVV certifier before/after install
✅ Documentation Keep TÜV certificate and instructions for inspections

Vehicle Compatibility Chart

Critical: Match your exact vehicle make, model, and year. Bolt patterns differ between model years and seating positions.

About Sportscraft Swivels

Sportscraft is the leading European manufacturer of motorhome seat swivels. Their turntable bases are the industry standard for van conversions across Europe, the UK, Australia, and New Zealand.

Key Features (All Models)

  • TÜV approved — independently tested and certified to German automotive safety standards (the strictest in Europe)
  • Crash tested — newer models like the RVP11219 are crash tested for occupant safety
  • 4-castor weight distribution — four nylon wheels spread the seat occupant's weight evenly, eliminating rocking and wobble
  • Large central bearing nut — smooth, stable rotation with no play
  • Heavy-duty powder-coated steel — corrosion-resistant, built to last the life of the vehicle
  • Offset designs available — some models offset the seat 100mm toward centre, giving more elbow room from the B-pillar
  • Weight: 15–17 kg depending on model
  • Height added: 44–48 mm

Why TÜV Approval Matters

TÜV (Technischer Überwachungsverein) is a German independent testing authority. A TÜV-approved swivel has been tested for:

  • Structural strength under load
  • Material quality and durability
  • Rotational smoothness and locking mechanism
  • Compatibility with vehicle-specific bolt patterns

TÜV certification gives confidence that the product meets rigorous safety standards — important for WoF inspectors and insurance purposes.

Installation Guide

We recommend professional installation by a qualified automotive technician or motorhome builder — especially if seatbelt anchorage points are affected.

Tools Required

  • Socket set (metric — typically 13mm, 16mm, 18mm)
  • Torque wrench
  • Ratchet extensions
  • Thread-locking compound (medium strength, e.g., Loctite 243)
  • Vehicle jack or ramps (for underfloor access if needed)

General Installation Steps

  1. Disconnect the battery — essential if the seat has airbags, heated elements, or electric adjustment. Wait at least 10 minutes after disconnecting before working near airbag connectors.
  2. Remove the seat — unbolt the 4 mounting bolts from the floor rail. Note bolt positions and torque settings.
  3. Disconnect wiring — carefully unplug any electrical connectors (airbag, heating, lumbar, occupancy sensor). Do not pull on wires — use the connector release tabs.
  4. Fit the swivel base to the seat — bolt the top plate of the swivel to the seat's original mounting points. Use the supplied hardware.
  5. Fit the assembly to the vehicle floor — bolt the bottom plate of the swivel to the original floor mounting points. Apply thread-locking compound.
  6. Reconnect all wiring — plug everything back in. Clear any airbag warning codes with a diagnostic tool if needed.
  7. Test the rotation — ensure smooth 180° rotation, solid lock in forward-facing position, and no binding or interference.
  8. Test the seatbelt — confirm the 3-point belt extends, retracts, and locks properly. Test the inertia reel by pulling sharply.
  9. Check clearances — steering wheel, handbrake, gear lever, centre console, B-pillar, headroom.
  10. Reconnect the battery — check for warning lights on the dashboard.

Common Installation Mistakes

  • Working with battery connected — airbag modules can deploy if triggered during removal. Always disconnect first.
  • Forgetting thread-lock — swivel bolts are subject to vibration. Without thread-lock, they can loosen over time.
  • Wrong bolt torque — too tight cracks mounting points; too loose allows movement. Follow Sportscraft's torque specs.
  • Not clearing airbag codes — if the airbag connector was unplugged, the dashboard light may stay on until codes are cleared with a diagnostic tool.
  • Ignoring the handbrake — on some driver-side installations, the rotated seat may contact the handbrake lever. Test before finalising.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use the swivelled seat while driving?

No. The seat must be locked in the forward-facing position with the seatbelt fastened while the vehicle is in motion. Using a swivelled seat while driving is illegal and extremely dangerous — there is no seatbelt protection in a rear-facing position in most vehicles.

Will a swivel fit my double/bench seat?

No. All Sportscraft swivels are for single OEM seats only. If your vehicle has a 2- or 3-person bench seat in front, the swivel will not fit.

Will this affect my WoF?

Potentially. Any seat modification can be inspected during a WoF check. Having a TÜV-approved Sportscraft swivel with proper documentation makes it much easier, but we recommend consulting your WoF inspector or an LVV certifier before or after installation.

Does the swivel add height to my seat?

Yes — all models add approximately 44–48mm. Check headroom and steering wheel clearance before purchasing.

Can I install it myself?

If you have mechanical experience and the right tools, DIY installation is possible. However, we recommend professional installation because:

  • Seats with airbags require careful handling
  • Incorrect installation could affect seatbelt performance
  • Professional records support WoF compliance

What's the weight limit?

Sportscraft swivels are rated for the original seat's weight capacity — typically up to 150 kg occupant weight. The swivel itself weighs 15–17 kg.

Left-hand or right-hand — what do I need?

In New Zealand (right-hand drive vehicles):

  • RH (right-hand) = driver's side
  • LH (left-hand) = passenger's side

Some models (RVP118, RVP11207) fit either side. Others are side-specific — check the product listing carefully.
