Towing Strops & Recovery Strops in NZ — The Complete Buyer's Guide
The Complete Guide to Towing Strops & Recovery Strops in New Zealand
Whether you're heading into the Kaimanawa Ranges, driving on 90 Mile Beach, or pulling a tractor out of a paddock, having the right towing or recovery strop in your vehicle can be the difference between getting home and getting stranded. This guide covers everything you need to know about choosing, using, and caring for towing and recovery strops in New Zealand conditions.
Recovery Strop vs Tow Strop — What's the Difference?
These terms get used interchangeably, but they're actually quite different tools:
| Feature | Recovery / Snatch Strop | Tow Strop / Tow Line |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Extract a stuck vehicle (bogged, beached, stuck in mud) | Tow a broken-down vehicle along a road or track |
| Material | Nylon (stretches 10–20%) | Polyester (minimal stretch, <3%) |
| How it works | Recovery vehicle drives forward, strop stretches and stores kinetic energy, then 'snaps' the stuck vehicle free | Steady, controlled pull — no jerking |
| Danger level | Higher energy = more dangerous if the strop breaks. Always use a recovery damper blanket. | Lower energy, but still dangerous — never stand in the line of pull |
Key rule: Never use a tow strap for snatch recovery (the sudden shock can snap a non-stretch strap), and never use a recovery strap for sustained towing (the constant flex wears out the nylon faster).
Types of Towing & Recovery Strops
1. Nylon Kinetic / Snatch Recovery Strops
Nylon recovery strops (also called "snatch straps") are the most common recovery tool for 4WD enthusiasts in NZ. The nylon weave stretches under load, storing kinetic energy that helps pull a stuck vehicle free with a smooth, powerful extraction.
- Best for: Mud, sand, beach, farm tracks, snow
- Our picks: Nylon Black Snake Strop (heavy duty with galvanised thimbles), TiTAN 16T Nylon Recovery Strop, or the budget-friendly TiTAN 8T Recovery Strap
- Tip: Choose a strop rated at least 2× your vehicle's GVM
2. Polyester Endless Sling Tow Lines
For flat towing a broken-down vehicle along a road, you want minimal stretch. Our TiTAN Endless Sling Towing Lines are continuous-loop polyester with a protective outer jacket — no weak points, no stitched eyes to fail. Available from 21 tonnes up to a massive 70 tonnes.
- Best for: Road towing, farm equipment, truck recovery, heavy haulage
- Our picks: TiTAN 42T 10m for most trucks, TiTAN 70T 10m for heavy haulage
3. Kevlar Short Strops
When space is tight and you need maximum strength in a short distance, Kevlar is the answer. The Kevlar Black Snake Short Strop delivers incredible breaking strength in a compact package — perfect for connecting to chassis-mounted recovery points in tight underbody spaces.
- Best for: Tight spaces, extreme loads, connecting recovery rope to vehicle
- Zero stretch — not for kinetic recovery, but ideal as a choker or extension connector
4. UHMWPE / Dyneema Ropes
Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (known as Dyneema) is stronger than steel wire but floats on water. We stock Dyneema rope packs for boat trailer winches and load-rated lifting applications.
5. Kinetic Recovery Kits
Don't want to buy everything separately? The Mongoose Kinetic Recovery Kit includes a 13-tonne kinetic rope and soft shackles — everything you need to recover a light vehicle, in one bag.
How to Size Your Recovery Strop
Getting the right size is critical for safety:
- Check your vehicle's GVM (Gross Vehicle Mass) — this is on the plate inside your driver's door jamb
- Multiply by 2–3× to get your minimum strop MBS (Minimum Breaking Strength)
-
Choose the right length:
- 6m — good for tight spaces, farm gates, tree stumps
- 9–10m — recommended for most 4WD recovery (safer distance between vehicles)
- Width matters too — wider strops (60mm+) spread the load better and are kinder to your recovery points
Quick Sizing Guide
| Vehicle | Typical GVM | Min Strop Rating | Our Recommendation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small SUV / Car | 1.5–2.0T | 5T+ | 5T Tow Strop or 8T Recovery Strap |
| Large SUV / Ute | 2.5–3.5T | 8T+ | 8T TiTAN 6m or Mongoose 13T |
| 4WD Truck / Heavy Ute | 3.0–4.5T | 13T+ | TiTAN 16T 9m |
| Truck / Heavy Vehicle | 8.0T+ | 21T+ | TiTAN 21T or 42T Endless Sling |
Safety Tips for Using Recovery Strops in NZ
- Always use a recovery damper blanket — drape a heavy blanket, jacket, or purpose-built damper over the middle of the strop. If it breaks, the damper slows the whip and prevents injury.
- Never use metal shackles with kinetic strops — use rated soft shackles instead. Metal shackles can become lethal projectiles if a strop fails.
- Check for damage before every use — look for cuts, abrasion, fraying, UV damage, and chemical contamination. If in doubt, replace it.
- Never exceed the rated capacity — a strop rated for 8T should never be used on a 10T vehicle, even "just this once".
- Attach to rated recovery points only — never attach to a tow ball (they snap off), bumper, or axle. Use chassis-mounted recovery points.
- Keep bystanders well clear — at least 1.5× the strop length away from the recovery in all directions.
- On the beach? Deflate tyres first (15 psi), then try rocking before pulling. Salt water and sand are tough on strops — rinse thoroughly after use.
Caring for Your Strops
- Rinse with fresh water after every use, especially in salt water or mud
- Dry in shade — UV degrades nylon and polyester over time
- Store loosely coiled in a dry bag — don't stuff them wet into a boot
- Inspect regularly — replace if you see fraying, cuts, or discolouration
- Never knot a strop — knots reduce breaking strength by up to 50%
