A premium coconut shell carbon block for standard 10" x 2.75" housings — reduces chlorine, taste, odour, PFAS, and chloramine, with VOC reduction available in the 1 micron CTO Plus variant.

The MATRIKX CTO range offers two carbon block options in the standard 10" size. Select your variant using the dropdown above.

  • CTO — 5 micron nominal. Reduces chlorine, PFAS, and chloramine.
  • CTO Plus — 1 micron nominal. Reduces chlorine, PFAS, chloramine, and VOCs.

Both are made from 100% coconut shell activated carbon — a renewable material — and manufactured in an ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certified facility. Certified for sustainability by WQA (S-803). NSF and WQA certified for material safety.

Important: these filters must be used only with microbiologically safe and adequately disinfected water. They are not a substitute for disinfection.

All performance figures are manufacturer-stated based on internal and independent laboratory testing. NSF/ANSI 42 and WQA Standard 42 certifications cover material safety requirements only.

Which variant do I need?

Variant Micron Best suited to
CTO 5 micron nominal General chlorine, taste and odour, PFAS and chloramine reduction. Good flow, lower pressure drop.
CTO Plus 1 micron nominal All CTO performance plus VOC reduction and finer particulate filtration. Suited to under-sink and drinking water applications.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between CTO and CTO Plus?

CTO is a 5 micron nominal carbon block that reduces chlorine, PFAS, and chloramine. CTO Plus is a 1 micron nominal carbon block that does all of this and also reduces VOCs. The finer rating on CTO Plus means a slightly higher pressure drop and lower flow-based capacity per litre per minute. If you need VOC reduction or finer particulate filtration, choose CTO Plus. For general chlorine, taste and odour, PFAS, and chloramine reduction at good flow, CTO is the right choice.

What does NSF/ANSI 42 certification mean for these filters?

On the MATRIKX CTO and CTO Plus, NSF/ANSI 42 certification — from both NSF International and WQA — covers material safety requirements only. It confirms the materials in contact with drinking water are safe. It does not certify the performance claims. Those figures are manufacturer-stated based on internal and independent laboratory testing.

What is PFAS and does this filter reduce it?

PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are a group of synthetic chemicals found in some water supplies. The manufacturer states PFAS reduction capacity of >12,300 litres at 1.9 L/min for the CTO and >13,200 litres at 1.9 L/min for the CTO Plus, based on >95% reduction at 1500 ppt.

Does it reduce chloramine?

Yes — both CTO and CTO Plus reduce chloramine. The manufacturer states >83% reduction at 3ppm, with stated capacities shown in the spec table above.

Can I use these filters with tank or bore water?

Only if the water supply is microbiologically safe and adequately disinfected. These carbon blocks are not a disinfection device. If your tank or bore water is not disinfected, you need a UV system or other disinfection method upstream of or alongside this filter.

Will it fit my existing housing?

The 10" standard size fits industry-standard 10" open sump housings with a 2.75" internal diameter. If you're unsure about housing compatibility, check your housing dimensions before ordering.

How often should I replace it?

Replacement depends on water quality, flow rate, and usage. Use the capacity figures as a guide — when chlorine taste or odour returns, or when flow drops noticeably, replace the cartridge. Flush the cartridge after installation before use.
