Our NZ made floating mullet fishing net is a premium commercial-grade floating mono net designed specifically for New Zealand waters. Featuring a 5 mm braided lead core bottom rope with lead inside and a 7 mm floating top rope paired with large whisper floats, this net maintains perfect buoyancy and positioning for optimal mullet fishing performance.
Made with 0.5 mm mono mesh and available in 90 mm mesh size, these nets can also be custom-made in 30md, 36md, or 40md and in 100 mm mesh. Standard nets are 30 mesh deep and come in lengths of 30 m, 40 m, 60 m, and 100 m, with custom builds available from $8.50 per metre. Each net is carefully slung and mounted to catch the maximum number of fish per length, ensuring efficiency and durability.
These floating nets are ideal for areas like the Waikato River, as they float on the surface, avoiding rocks, hollow trees, weeds, and bottom-dwelling species like stingrays that can damage traditional nets. They require water depths over 3.0 m to float effectively; in shallow water under 2.5 m, they behave like standard set nets.
Grey mullet are commonly found throughout New Zealand’s North Island coastal waters, especially in muddy harbours, mangrove swamps, and estuaries. Some even migrate into freshwater rivers. Mullet can be caught year-round, with peak activity from November to March, often using set nets or beach seines.
Did you know? Grey mullets travel as far as the Karapiro Dam on the Waikato River and up the Waipa River to Te Kuiti before returning to sea to spawn.
