Fishing Net Best Sellers: The Mullet Nets, Flounder Nets and Net-Making Gear Kiwis Are Buying Now
Every nine days we go through our real orders from the last 90 days to see what's genuinely flying out of our fishing net range. Braided lead core rope and net floats still top the list by a country mile, but you've heard about those from us before. So this round we've looked at the next lot of genuine best sellers.
It all sits in our Fishing Nets range, made up and supplied from our Auckland operation for netters right around New Zealand and across the Pacific.
1. Mullet Nets, Mono Mesh
Our most popular finished net over the last three months. These NZ made mullet nets come ready to use, with a 6mm top rope and floats, plus a braided lead core bottom rope. You pick 90mm or 100mm mesh in 0.50mm mono, to suit North and South Island regulations, and lengths from 20m up to 100m.
Recreational netters use them as set nets or drag nets, and commercial fishers buy the longer lengths. All you need to add is an anchor at each end and marker buoys with your name on them. Prices run from $133 up to $799 for the biggest nets. If you're working shallower water, there's also a 1.4m deep version from $115.

2. Deluxe Flounder Net, Multi-Mono with Floating Top Rope
This is the step up for keen flounder netters. It's made from commercial-grade multi-mono mesh, slung very loose, with an 8mm floating top rope so you don't need any floats. The 5mm lead core bottom rope keeps it down on the seabed where flounder feed. It comes bagged and tied down.
The product page says these are the same nets used for commercial flounder fishing in winter, which is why serious harbour netters go for them. You can choose 4.75, 5 or 5-1/4 inch mesh, in lengths from 20m to 100m. They're from $121, up to $605.

3. Cray Pot Mesh, 120ply 3 inch Black
Building new pots or reskinning tired ones? This was the most popular mesh in the whole net range over the last 90 days. It's a thick 120ply twine with 3 inch (76mm) holes, 20 meshes deep, and it suits most wooden and steel pots. It's strong with good abrasion resistance.
Crayfish pot owners and DIY builders buy it by the length. It's listed at $13, and it also comes in orange and in a lighter 60ply.

4. AFM6A Pacific Island Mesh, 3 inch 0.50mm
This one is a favourite with our Island customers. It's heavy-duty unslung mesh, 0.50mm twine (about 30lb strength) with 3 inch holes and 20 meshes deep, made specifically for reef fishing in the Islands. It's mesh only, so you hang it yourself onto your own top and bottom ropes.
Families in Fiji, Samoa, Tonga and the Cook Islands, and the people here who make nets to send home, buy it to build their own nets. Please note: the product page says this mesh is not legal in NZ except for drag nets for yellow-eyed mullet or herrings. It's $60 a length.

5. Net Mending Twine, Green 210D/9
Plenty of people just want another season out of the net they've got. This green polyester mending twine comes in a 200g roll and is what you use to patch holes and tears.
It's a cheap fix that saves a good net, which is why it keeps turning up in orders. It's $10 a roll.

A few more that were busy over the same 90 days: bait cotton ($2.99) to keep your bait on the hook and away from crabs, and the heavy duty scallop dredge ($55), made to NZ regulations. Check MPI rules for where and when you can take scallops before you go.
What this tells us
Kiwis still want a good finished net, whether it's mullet in the estuary or flounder on the harbour flats. Plenty more would rather build or fix their own. If you're setting up for Fiji, Samoa, Tonga or the Cook Islands, take a look at our Pacific Islands nets.
Always check your local fishing rules for net lengths, mesh sizes and where you can set before you head out.
