CTEK MXT4 - 8 Stage Battery Charger 24V 4A

The essential maintenance charger for 24v systems

IP65 Rated

The XT 4000 is an ideal battery charger for your caravan, boat or industry application. The battery charger is well suited for year-round use.

Features

  • Eight steps, fully automatic switch mode model.
  • Revives, charges, checks and maintains virtually all types of 24V lead-acid batteries (Wet, MF, GEL and AGM) from 8Ah to 100Ah, up to 250Ah maintenance.
  • Desulphation mode with pulses.
  • Soft start for severely discharged batteries.
  • Recondition mode with controlled top charging recovers the capacity of a severely discharged battery.
  • Maintenance pulse charging increases battery life and gives a superb performance.
  • Charges even drained batteries.
  • Temperature-compensated for optimal charging voltage at all times.
  • Low back current drain, low ripple and input voltage independent (170-260V).
  • High efficiency: 85%
  • The charger can be connected for months, ideal for seasonal vehicles.
  • Compact design with mounting holes for permanent assembly.
  • 5-year warranty.

Charging

The MULTI XT 4000 charges and analyses in eight fully automatic steps.

  • Desulphation
  • Desulphation with pulsing for sulphated batteries.
  • Start
  • Starting phase for charging. The starting phase continues until the battery’s terminal voltage has risen over a preset level. At this point, charging goes into the bulk phase. If the terminal voltage has not reached the preset level within a preset time, charging is suspended. The error mode is indicated. This indicates a battery which is faulty or has too large capacity. If a large battery is charged that has been severely discharged, it may be necessary to restart the charger after a preset time.
  • Bulk
  • Primary charging where approximately 80% of the charging takes place. The charger delivers maximum current until the terminal voltage has risen to the preset level. After a number of hours, the charger goes on to the next phase, even if maximum voltage is not reached.
  • Absorption
  • Final charging, voltage is kept at the preset level. During this phase, the current is gradually reduced. If the maximum length of time for Absorption is exceeded, the charger automatically continues with Analysis.
  • Analysis
  • Charging is suspended for a short period and the battery voltage measured. If it falls too quickly, the battery is probably faulty. Charging is suspended and an error is indicated.
  • Recond
  • Recond is used to recover severely discharged flooded batteries and for reconditioning severely discharged batteries suffering from stratification. The voltage increases with the reduced current for a limited time period (depending on the charge level of the battery at the start). The higher voltage starts some gassing and mixing of the acid, which is beneficial for both battery capacity and expected life. The battery could emit explosive gas during this step.
  • Maintenance charging - float
  • During the first 10 days of maintenance charging the battery is maintained with constant voltage.
  • Maintenance charging - pulse
  • State of charge varies between 95% and 100%. The battery receives a pulse when the voltage sinks, keeping the battery in good shape when it is not being used. The charger can be connected for months at a time. If the battery is charged and/or the battery’s terminal voltage drops, the charger starts a charge pulse until the voltage has reached the preset level. The charge pulse is then interrupted and the cycle is repeated as long as the charger is in the pulse maintenance phase. If the terminal voltage drops even lower, the charger automatically reverts to the beginning of the charging curve. If possible, check the water level in the battery.

Using the MULTI XT 4000 gives your battery optimum service life and operational reliability.

Batteries

The MULTI XT 4000 can be set very easily to charge different types of lead-acid batteries (Wet, MF, GEL and AGM) and conditions. You will find an explanation of the various battery types under Charger University, Battery Types.

The MULTI XT 4000 charges a wide range of battery sizes, from 8Ah to 100Ah (up to 250Ah maintenance).

SETTINGS

  • NORMAL Normal setting for wet batteries, MF and for most Gel batteries. A somewhat lower charge voltage may be preferable for some GEL batteries.
  • Snowflake This setting is recommended for charging batteries at temperatures lower than -5 degrees C. It is also suitable for many AGM batteries.
  • RECOND This mode is used to recover severely discharged batteries where you might expect stratified acid (high acid weight at the bottom, low on top). Use this mode with care, as the high voltage may cause some water loss. 32V is normally no problem for electronics in 24V systems, although maximum effect and minimum risk for electronics is achieved by disconnecting the battery.

Temperature

To protect the charger from overheating, the MULTI XT 4000 is fitted with power limitation. Power reduces when the ambient temperature increases. The power also reduces if the charger were to be covered, which protects the charger from damage. The charger continues to work, but at a lower output. When the ambient temperature drops the power automatically increases again.

The back current drain drains the battery if the charger is connected without the power cord.

Ripple denotes the amount of interference between current and voltage. A high current ripple heats the battery and shortens its life. A linear charger has a current ripple of 70 - 400%, which is much larger than the maximum of 5 per cent for a modern sealed battery. Voltage ripple could harm other equipment connected to the battery.

MULTI XT 4000 delivers voltage and current with shallow ripple. The battery has a long service life, and there is no risk of damage to other electronic devices connected to it.
