Two Styles of Cast Nets To Choose From In Sizes To Suit Your Needs

Cast nets are circular fishing nets with weights around their bottom edge. Also known as throw nets, they are used to catch fish that live in shallow water or near the shore.

The Basic Structure of the cast net differs between American Style and the Japanese Style - There is no style that functions better than another, ultimately it comes down to technique.

The basic cast net structure includes a swivel, handline, horn, lead line, brail lines, and netting. The swivel must be made of two metal loops or rings attached together so they will turn in both directions. The handline is a rope attached to the swivel on one end and attached to your wrist with split rings on the other. The horn is a ring with an indentation around its centre where the top of the net is tied. The lead line is attached to all four corners of the net's brail lines and sinks it in deeper waters; this rope must have sinkers attached to it to keep it weighted down. And finally, nylon multifilament or monofilament nets are used for catching fish because these nets have different mesh sizes.

For species, you would expect to catch with a cast net such as garfish/piper, herring/yellow-eyed mullet, and pilchard the minimum mesh size is 25mm.

In comparison to the American-style cast net, the Japanese-style cast net has a bottom pocket. It is preferred by commercial fishermen but can be used by anyone who wants to catch smaller fish in abundance.
