Let's Start off by looking at what is a wind-on Leader?
A wind-on the leader is a technique for joining your mainline to your leader without having the swivel jam in your rod tip. This is particularly useful if you use a longer leader, which will reduce line breakage around snags as the leader is a more durable and thicker material.
It is a very strong connection that is very dependable once you master it. The wind-on leaders work great for casting baits, trolling, live baiting and jigging. They also work well for butterfly trolling when necessary for a bigger catch.
Wind-on leaders are safer for you and for the fish. Because a fish does not need to be hand-lined by a leader man with wind-ons, you can reduce your leaders to five feet. After winding the leader through the rod, the fish is close to the boat, and you can have better control of it.
A little bit of Back Story
In the late 1990s and early 2000s, anglers who fished for long-range (or big game) fish found that braided line was an ideal choice. It wasn’t long before other anglers on the same waters were using a braided line as well. The first people to use braided line successfully on large fish were those who used a technique called 'wind-on leaders.' When they began sharing their knowledge with other anglers, the fishing industry as a whole began using braided line. The popularity of wind-on leaders led to the need for clean connections between lines, which meant adopting new knots—a process that was necessary for everyone who used braided line if they hoped to land their catches in good condition.
The Bimini twist knot has been an essential tool used by long-range tuna fishermen for decades. This double line knot is used by anglers worldwide to attach hooks to monofilament lines. Long-range tuna fishermen adopted this knot to strengthen their lines when they were catching large Yellowfin tuna. The early big game anglers figured out that by attaching a loop to the Bimini twist and serving the hollow dacron line, they could create a leader with several feet of mono attached to it. They also figured out how to serve the monofilament leader into the dacron line. As the idea progressed, anglers came up with new and better ways to make wind-on leaders with leaders from 16 inches up to 25 feet long available today.
A Bimini twist knot is used to join your mainline to the leader. To tie it, use a fluorocarbon fishing line or a monofilament fishing line. Most anglers prefer fluorocarbon because it's more abrasion-resistant than monofilament, so it lasts longer. When you tie your Bimini twist knot, make sure that you leave extra line on both parts of it so that you can attach a swivel later on in the process.
The Bimini twist fishing knot is a very strong knot that retains almost the entire strength of the line to which it is tied. Resulting in a loop at the end of a line that can later be used for loop to loop connections.
